Who We Are

Smartville, located in Carlsbad, Calif. just outside San Diego, is addressing the challenge of repurposing and recycling a growing number of retired electric vehicle batteries into stationary, second-life battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the VP of Engineering will be responsible for leading technology and product development of Smartville’s EV battery pack repurposing solution and developing the end-to-end procedure from battery assessment, qualification to integration and productization. The VP of Engineering will run a diverse, cross-functional team of battery energy storage system (BESS) software and hardware professional. The VP of Engineering will lead and develop the company’s technology roadmap, with an end-goal of providing sustainable, low-supply-chain risk, and high-performance (BESS) from repurposed EV batteries. The VP of Engineering will also lead engineering, product definition, initial production setup, and initial manufacturing scale-up.

Responsibilities

• Lead BESS engineering team to perform product iteration and technology development.
• Lead Company IP strategies to develop leading expertise in EV battery repurposing and circularity.
• Work with external contractors, consultants and sub-component providers to develop fully integrated (BESSes).
• Develop and implement the company product vision; work with the business team to implement key product-market-fit.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive company policy and performance discipline to optimize engineering workflow and quality across the entire product development life cycle.

Requirements

• Ten plus (10+) years of engineering experience within relevant fields of energy storage, electrified mobility, energy engineering, and/or renewable energy.
• Expertise in electric vehicles, lithium batteries, battery management, and power conversion.
• Excellent exposure to contract manufacturing and suppliers in battery enclosure fabrication, lithium-ion batteries, power electronics, energy management systems, and fire protection equipment.
• Proven track record of successfully leading and managing cross-functional teams in a high-growth environment.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, agile and adaptable to a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated ability to drive change, implement process improvements, and deliver results.
• Strong expertise and strategic thinking in renewable energy and the energy tech space.

Salary Range: $170,000 – $220,000 Annually
