The Role
Smartville is seeking a motivated Hardware Engineer to join our growing team in Carlsbad, CA. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career professional to help develop and test the hardware behind our Smartville 360™ energy storage systems. You’ll work under the guidance of senior engineers and gain hands-on experience with power electronics, circuit design, and communication systems that connect with repurposed EV battery packs.

What You’ll Do:
- Support schematic design and PCB layout for power electronics and communication systems
- Assist with component selection and evaluation, especially for BMS and CAN communication
- Build and test hardware prototypes, verifying communication with EV battery systems
- Document designs, test procedures, and results, including CAN-based data handling
- Troubleshoot and debug hardware, supporting root cause analysis for repurposed batteries
- Collaborate with software and firmware teams to ensure seamless system integration
- Stay current on hardware technologies, EV battery systems, and industry trends
- Follow safety and quality standards related to high-voltage systems and communication protocols
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or related field)
- 3+ years of experience in hardware development.
- Experience with microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, PIC32) and digital circuit design
- Familiarity with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle)
- Comfortable using electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, analyzers)
- Strong problem-solving skills and curiosity about energy systems and communication interfaces
- Good communication and collaboration skills
Bonus Points For:
- Knowledge of the CAN protocol and communication with BMS or vehicle systems
- Exposure to EV battery technology or energy storage systems
- Understanding of battery management parameters (voltage, SoC, SoH, etc.)
- Experience with Bluetooth or other communication technologies
- Familiarity with C/C++ or Python for embedded systems or data analysis
- Hands-on experience from school projects, internships, or personal builds in power electronics, renewable energy, or embedded systems
