CEC CalTestBed Program Underway: Smartville Partnering With UCI to Test Proprietary Battery Controls

Smartville, supported by the California Energy Commission CalTestBed program, is working with the University of California, Irvine to test its second life battery energy storage system (ESS).  Using UC Irvine’s cutting edge grid integration facility, Smartville is able to test and validate its proprietary power interface and controller for second life EV battery packs. These tests utilized the facility’s high powered cycler, thermal chamber, and data-acquisition system to conduct a 9 month testing program. The results of these tests will provide key performance data as we move closer to our productization objectives.

Pictured above is Smartville’s scaled demonstration, undergoing comprehensive testing within the confines of UC Irvine’s full-scale walk-in chamber. This carefully curated environment ensures an accurate evaluation of the product’s performance and capability, aiming to deliver a product that meets the highest professional standards in the industry.

We are grateful for this opportunity to work with the CEC and UCI’s industry leading test facilities. It’s a key step for Smartville to overcome major barriers in the battery circular economy and accelerate sustainable energy transition.
